I've said this about Mittens, but it's even more true for Huntsman who still has a chance to take a step back
from the wingnuttery path. McCain won the primary by positioning himself as the serious elder statesman. For a long time it looked like he wouldn't win, but then Republican primary voters decided the rest of them were unelectable goofballs and so they came home to McCain. Despite the crazy base, the "serious" candidate often wins the Republican primary.
