While I'm all for improvement of basic Civics education, whatever happened to the local control mantra?
WASHINGTON (AP) - Bush administration officials are exploring
ways to use the public's strong patriotic response to the Sept. 11
attacks to promote the teaching of civics and the obligation of
citizenship in American classrooms, a U.S. official said Saturday.
A working group from several Cabinet
departments and federal agencies is looking for
"resources and options" to support civics
education in the public schools, said Lindsey
Kozberg, communications director for the USA
Freedom Corps.
and, while we're on that, isn't Freedom Corps a little bit scary? The silence by the Right on some of these things is really bizarre... I would have figured federally sponsored local snitch clubs would offend some sensibilities.
