Explain This

I don't want to make too much of this, but I really don't understand why the hell Bush would ask a question like this while at Auschwitz:

At one point Mr. Bush turned to Ms. Swiebocka and asked, "Do people challenge the accuracy of what you present?" Mr. Fleischer, who was accompanying the president a few paces behind, said he could not hear the answer.

UPDATE: Well, as someone reminds me in comments, it isn't as bad as Poppy's ""Boy, they were big on crematoriums, weren't they?" comment...
