All Those Cars Gotta Park Somewhere
Cars are basically the enemy of pedestrian friendly density and walkability for the simple reason that they take up space. Anything which reduces the number of cars per person in a city improves its potential. Cars are also the way that lots of people get around, and I'm not suggesting that they be banned or priced out of existence, but finding non-punitive (or slightly punitive) ways to discourage car ownership in a neighborhood like mine is good for the neighborhood. I don't know if Philly Car Share's claim that they've reduced the number of cars the broader by 13,000 is true, but it's plausible. My household has been without a car since 2003 or so. If not for decent car sharing we'd probably have strongly considered getting one at some point. Now we aren't.
