Of course they don't, but I think one thing missing from this conversation is that a lot of people
on "our side" have been invested in this idea for awhile. Losing means failure, and failure is an opportunity to try to push the party in whatever direction you imagine it should be pushed. I was in a couple of meetings in Washington with various groups of people after the 2006 election where variations of that phrase kept popping out of peoples' mouths like a habitual tic, even though the Democrats had just, you know, won.
