I was talking with someone the other day about how when faced with the oncoming hordes on the internets, journalists could've clung to knowledge and expertise or they could've clung to authority as their raison d'etre. The Villager press, at least, decided that authority (as in, we're the New York Fucking Times and you're not) was the important thing to cling to.
