This exchange between
Joan Walsh and Chris Matthews has resonated with me for awhile. I think
guys like Alito and Matthews see race issues as a kind of zero-sum tribal competition. One extra goody for the black guy means one less goody for the Irish- or Italian-American guys. And they don't really see anything wrong with perceiving the world that way, unless you're an African-American of course in which case it's racism.
