Obviously increasing the gas tax is a complete nonstarter in a world of
rising gas prices. Oh well. Yes gas
is expensive taxes are regressive but even in this country most poor people don't drive. If you want to do something to help poor people, "not raising the gas tax" is pretty far down the list. And, yes, I'm on board with using gas tax increases to mail money to poor people.
Mostly unrelated, I think my biggest difficulty when living in England was learning to use the word 'petrol' which I don't think I ever did. Referring to 'gas' confused people a lot.
