This is the kind of thing that only Dean Baker and crazy liberal bloggers ever point out, but the fact is that even if we do absolutely nothing to Social Security, and down the road it can't afford to pay fully scheduled benefits, the benefits it will be able to afford (after cutting scheduled benefits to meet its budget) will still be higher
than the benefits it pays out today.
