I think class is a messier concept in the US than most places, so messy that we mostly lack the appropriate vocabulary to even discuss it. But it's clear
that the elite have an allegiance to each other that trumps everything else.
Not precisely related, but I'm reminded of the greatest David Broder quote ever (regarding Bill Clinton):
He came in here and he trashed the place and it's not his place.
