I think it's true that a lot of people erroneously think the deficit is somehow a cause of the bad economy, so you can't entirely rule out the idea that being a deficit peacock has no political gain, but what they really care about, unsurprisingly,
are jobs. Even if there's value in deficit peacocking, there's presumably greater value in jobs peacocking. Also, too, actually providing more jobs.
