I'm not quite sure how to express this, as I'm in no way suggesting this election doesn't matter. Nor do I think the press are doing what they did in 2000, when they aggressively promoted the idea that what mattered was who was going to be the star of The Presidency Show, but that otherwise there weren't really any consequences to the election.
But there's still a weird sense, unlike any year in my lifetime, that this is not A Very Big Thing. I'm not quite sure how to explain what I mean.
