I don't know much
about the Boeing situation, but after years of observing management/labor issues I do know that a big reason management kicks labor is... because they can. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with actually cutting costs. Bosses are very important people and labor are not and it's management's job to kick their asses as much as possible.
