Not going to speak for everybody, but to the extent that I was
miserable when I was teen it was because I was isolated and lonely. Until I was old enough to get a driver's license I had no mobility, and back then parents (mostly not my parents, but many parents) thought that "talking on the phone" was some sort of subversive activity that needed to be rationed.
