Formerly known as Crossrail, it's the kind of project which is basically unpossible to imagine happening anywhere in Amerka, even in New York where they can't seem to manage to complete the 2nd Ave. Subway. It mostly duplicates existing service, because those existing lines are too clogged. The scale of it is astounding. The cost, by American standards, was actually pretty cheap.
Yurp has its problems (some countries more than others) but the idea that nice things are possible hasn't been lost.
