I'm not against primaries, of course. But the Kennedy primary was extremely cynical, especially as attitudes within the party broadly were very different than they usually are. Part of this is due to my memory of the Lamont-Lieberman primary, during which there were endless pieces about how it was basically fascism to try to run against Joe Lieberman. Fascism no more! Also, you lost. haha.
