Democratic voters love redemption arcs, and they *love* "reasonable Republicans," and they just can't wait to find one to vote for (see: the numerous Republican governors in supposedly very blue states). I don't mean millions of partisan Democrats would've voted for Donald Trump, but if the guy had just managed to maintain a "new tone" for about 3 days straight once a month, and appeared to take the situation seriously, he would've won.
