I understand all the reasons our system makes this difficult, but when you are in charge of everything you should act like you are in charge of everything. The voters assume you are. Take credit and responsibility for things. Unpopular compromises aren't magically transmuted into popular simply because you add the word 'bipartisan' to them.
Again, a lot of this is baked into the system, though some of the reasons for that (not all!) could be changed.
