I think the real story here (not damning, just what is happening) is Romney hadn't really fed himself (cooked, etc.) in decades so this was the limits of his imagination when
stuck in DC.
Romney's a weirdo and not a good guy, but despite his awkwardness and general level of evil he is still more recognizably human than most of the Senate.
Human doesn't mean good.
